Sad loss of Liz Bentham

FoAM members, volunteers, dog walkers and other regular Park visitors were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Liz Bentham. Liz has been a volunteer in the Northwich Woodlands for around 19 years and was one of the earliest members of FoAM. Through her work as a volunteer, as a regular dog walker and her love of the natural world and knowledge of moths, Liz met many people in the Woodlands and will be greatly missed.

Liz’s husband Howard has asked that anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Liz should make it to FoAM.

FoAM’s Autumn 2020 Newsletter

As we enter the second national lockdown, we are fortunate to have Northwich Woodlands on our doorstep. The Woodlands provide a wonderful place to visit for safe exercise and enjoyment. Although FoAM has not been able to restart its events programme as a result of the pandemic, there is still much to report.

It’s the time of year when the amazing spectacle of starling murmurations can be seen. For the last couple of weeks, there have been good views from the bird hide overlooking Budworth Mere, near the Rangers’ cabin at Marbury. Late afternoon, as the starlings come into roost, is also a good time to have a chance of seeing a bittern. There are currently two of these elusive birds in the reedbed.

This Beautiful Marbled Moth was found on 10th August by Liz Bentham at Marbury. This moth has only been found a few times on the South Coast and has never been found this far north before.

FoAM Committee Changes

At a Meeting of the Committee held by Zoom on 5 August 2020, Trustees agreed that Mike Allen be appointed to the Officer role of Secretary to replace Frances Findlay. Frances would have reached the end of her three year term of office at the time of the AGM scheduled to be held on Monday 18th May 2020, but which had to be cancelled due to Covid 19.

Also at their Zoom Meeting held on 5 August 2020, the Committee agreed that Jim Jeeves would take over the role of Membership Secretary from Debbie Antrobus.

The Committee thanked Frances and Debbie for their work and welcomed Mike and Jim to their new roles.
